Protocol for action in the event of a player's accident

1.Objective

Establish a clear procedure so that delegates and non-healthcare staff know how to act quickly, orderly and safely in the event of an accident or injury to a player during training or matches.

2.General principles

  • The safety of the player is the priority.
  • Only basic first aid skills will be used, never replacing the judgment of a healthcare professional.
  • Whenever necessary, the medical coverage of the federal insurance will be activated. If necessary, the insurance will manage the ambulance.
  • Only call 112 in case of a life-threatening emergency. Never call 112 or go to the public health service.

3. Responsibilities

3.1. Section Delegate

  • Ensure that the first aid kit is available and in good condition.
  • Give first aid to the injured player on the field (himself or a member of the staff or physiotherapist)
  • Coordinate the initial action in case professional medical assistance is required.
  • Contact the family/guardian in the case of minors.
  • Advise and inform the player and/or family/guardian of the most pertinent action in their case according to this protocol and the conditions of the federative insurance.
  • In case of requiring the service of the federative medical insurance; will record the incident, report and request the communication to the Club (club@ceurugby.com).

4. Procedure for action

4.1. Initial assessment

  1. Approach the player without moving him unnecessarily.
  2. Check:
    • State of consciousness.
    • Breathing and pulse.
    • Evident bleeding.

4.2. Immediate decision

  • Life-threatening emergency (unconsciousness, arrest, severe difficulty breathing, heavy bleeding, serious suspicion of cervical injury):
    • Call 112 immediately.
    • Do not move the player until medical services arrive.
    • Use AED if necessary and available.
  • Non-vital but serious injury (obvious fracture, dislocation, concussion, intense pain):
    • Notify the medical service if present.
    • If not, call 112 and keep the player at rest.
    • Immobilize in a basic way if it can be done without risk.
  • Minor injuries (cuts, bumps, scratches):
    • Use material from the first aid kit (cleaning, disinfection, local cold).
    • Assess whether he can return to play or needs rest.

4.3. Communication and registration

  • Notify the family/guardian immediately if the player is a minor.
  • In case of requiring emergency assistance, you must call MútuaCat (932533893) and provide the following information about the injured person:
    • Name and surnames
    • DNI/NIE/Passport
    • Contact telephone number of the player or family member/guardian
    • Contact email of the player or family member/guardian. This email will receive all the authorizations required by the case.
    • And communicate the medical center of the insurance chosen for the emergency,.
  • In case of not requiring an emergency visit, but if you want to request an outpatient visit (https://sport.mutuacat.org/es/cuadro-medico/), once this visit has been obtained you must inform the Club (club) so that the Club can manage the authorization with MutuaCat. Reporting:
    • Center
    • Type of view
    • Injury
    • date
  • Inform the Club about the opening of an insurance statement through club@ceurugby.com.

5.After the accident

  • In the event of hospitalization, ensure that the player is accompanied by a family member or a member of the Club.
  • After each outpatient visit, the player must inform the Club (club@ceurugby.com)
  • In the event of any treatment, until completion of this or obtaining discharge the player is not covered by the federative insurance. Therefore, he cannot play or train.
  • In the event of a player being treated for an emergency, the player must send the emergency report to the Club (club@ceurugby.com) so that the Club can process the report.
  • In any case of emergency, regardless of the medical discharge, the player will have his federation license suspended for 10 calendar days. This means that he will not be able to be selected for any match, including friendly matches. Nor participate in training.
  • Monitor the player’s condition and inform the coaches and the Club.
  • Review and replenish the material used in the first aid kit.

6.Training

  • The Delegates and staff should have, at least, the World Rugby First Aid Level 1 course.
  • The Club will promote internal workshops to practice accident situations
